    Alternatives ARE expensive
    I live in the inner-city and have a rat infestation problem. I didn't know about the new rules on ban of the sale of loose rat poison blocks . So, I went to a local Home Depot to buy effective rat bait blocks I used in the past - a pack of 12 cost about $4.95. All I could find was a packages of bait traps with ONE bait block in each trap. Each package costs $8.75. I'd need about 4 or 5 of these to take care of my problem. In the past one pack of 12 more than did the job. So, now I have to spend over $40.00 to get the same effect or call in an exterminator (and that's pricey) or call the city where I live - they might respond in 2 or 3 months. I have at least a decent job - so I can bite the bullet and buy the stuff. However, most of those living in my town either are in extreme poverty or hold marginal jobs. The result: they will not be buying rat poison anytime soon. This means that the rat infestation problem is going to get real bad - and that will cause health problems. Seems like if you live in the inner-city your damned if you do or damned if don't.

    Same experience
    I just had the same thing happen to me. As appalling as i think this practice of charging extra is, at least people should be made aware that they might be charged extra beforehand. As a matter of fact, I think a complete listing of all charges that may be incurred at the office should be available in a stack in the lobby for full disclosure and under what conditions more charges might be added. I also think, to the doctor who posted,... if you are not willing to hear some griping and complaining from patients at a physical exam, then I believe you are in the wrong line of business.
