Mayor of Chicago Emanuel should be ashamed to declare himself a citizen of a democracy. A second generation American who don't honor the privileges his parents were given...and him in public schools, etc. What oath of office did he swear to? Globalization? Fascism? Not the Constitution. Resign.

Thank you so much for your article Mary. I held many of the precepts you cite previously and your article comes as affirmation. I hope that the people of Wisconsin are aware that their vigilant participation in the upcoming recall election of Scott Walker is a testament to the survival or demise of democracy in America as we know it. Nothing less than one vote for one man versus corporate influence over people’s lives is at stake.

Frankly I began to order books elsewhere when I learned that Amazon.com had become a member of ALEC. I thought the e-tax was the primary reason for Amazon's membership and this article simply confirmed my suspicions. But because of who ALEC represents and what it does, well utilitarian ethics simply don't work for me. I congratulate and am thankful that the board of directors of Amazon.com for removing themselves from ALEC.

Right to work laws are about competition and fairness for ALL (not just union shops). I would think Wisconsin workers would welcome this and allow open competition. this could bring a lot more job opportunities to the state.

I'm an out-of-stater who gave money to Democrats and the Recall Walker organizations, so I should be compared to David Koch. The newspapers in question wouldn't report that I grew up in Wisconsin and was assured during all that time that democracy was the best possible political system, and that the pledge I took multiple times in school contained a truth that we all could be proud of: We live in a republic which stands for "liberty and justice for all". WSJ and MJS wouldn't mention that Mr. Koch would like to change that pledge to "more liberty for me, and more prisons for you".
