It was an eventful week on Capitol Hill, as many high-profile issues were debated and considered in both the House and Senate. Each chamber tackled legislation regarding the Iraq War, while the Senate began consideration of a comprehensive immigration bill. For an in-depth look at the bills considered in Congress since Monday, we again turn to Robert McElroy’s TheWeekInCongress. His site is a great resource for citizens wishing to keep track of what their members are up to in Washington, and we urge you to check it out. Follow the headlines below to the Congresspedia articles covering the respective issues, which in turn link to and heavily rely on McElroy’s analyses.
- Both the House and Senate passed a supplemental spending bill which would fund the Iraq War through fiscal year (FY) 2007 (ending Sept. 30). The bill contains no timetables or recommendations for U.S. troop withdrawal.
- The Senate began debate on a comprehensive immigration bill and considered numerous amendments, including several regarding a provision which would establish a “guest worker” program for migrant laborers.
- The House passed a pair of bills designed to increase disclosure and enforcement of lobbying laws and regulations.
- The House passed five bills aimed at providing military veterans with additional benefits and improving the process by which they are delivered.
