Search Engines and Editorial Integrity [1]
Submitted by Sheldon Rampton [2] on
Eight of the major internet search engines insert advertisements in search engine results without clear and conspicuous disclosure that the ads are ads. The organization Commercial Alert has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against misleading practices by Lycos [3], HotBot [4], AltaVista [5], LookSmart [6], MSN.com [7], Netscape [8], iWon [9] and Direct Hit [10]. If you're looking for a search engine with some integrity, try Google [11], Yahoo [12] or Excite [13] instead.
