Another update, [http://www.iraqslogger.com/index.php/post/2798/DoD_Flip-Flop_YouTube_Banned_But_Watch_It from IraqSlogger.com]:
One day after the Pentagon banned US military personnel worldwide from accessing the wildly popular YouTube Web site via DoD computers and networks, the weekly electronic newsletter of the US-led Multi-National Forces-Iraq (MNF-I) today makes a banner appeal for US forces and others to watch MNF-I's new YouTube channel.
Oops. ...
The [http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=MNFIRAQ&p=v MNF-I YouTube channel] has garnered more than a million video viewings -- many surely from US military personnel who are featured on the channel, whose contributions to the channel are sought by commanders, and who as of yesterday are banned from accessing YouTube via their DoD computers and DoD Web connections.
[http://www.odwyerpr.com/members/0515bm_shell.htm O'Dwyer's PR Daily] (sub req'd) reports that Hofmeister has also given presentations in "Oklahoma City, Milwaukee, Montgomery, Denver, Charlotte, Louisville, Nashville, and Indianapolis so far this year."
Shell's website features [http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=us-en&FC2=/us-en/html/iwgen/zzz_lhn.html&FC3=/us-en/tailored/energy_security/dialog/dialog.html a map] of its ongoing "dialogue with America," and also lists "some of the most [http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=us-en&FC2=/us-en/html/iwgen/leftnavs/zzz_lhn1_0_0.html&FC3=/us-en/tailored/energy_security/faq/faq.html frequently asked questions]" during Hofmeister's talks. One noteworthy question listed in the FAQ is: "Is there an argument you could make to persuade people to allow more offshore drilling?"
On May 15, the Associated Press ran [http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003585237 a follow-up story] confirming that the ban on journalists reporting from attack sites is being enforced:
Police prevented TV cameramen and news photographers from filming the scene of a bombing Tuesday under a new policy limiting coverage of the devastating explosions that have become a hallmark of Iraq's violence.
To enforce its order that a group of Iraqi journalists leave Tayaran Square, where the bombing occurred, police fired several shots in the air, reporters said.
hi, Philip,
Thanks for stopping by, and for your work to raise LaVena Johnson's case. I hadn't heard of her prior to the House hearing, but everything that I've read about her death is very troubling and points to a cover-up at some level. Hopefully Congress and/or the family's FOIA request will result in the release of more information.
best,
Diane
I am the author of <a href="http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/pfc_lavena_johnson/">the LaVena Johnson petition</a> addressed to the Senate and House Armed Services Committees. I wanted to thank you, Diane, and CMD for bringing your attention to LaVena's story. I also commend you for examining the broader subject: the costs that this war has imposed on service families and democracy itself. Good work.
