Later, when a Louisiana senator is caught red handed seeing a slew of real life ho's and is given a slap on the wrist by his fellow GOPS, but his fellow Republican colleague from Idaho, caught red-handed (or is that toe-tapping?) in an airport toilet stall, Sen. Mitch McComical says his behavior is "unforgivable"? What a bunch of phony bigots wrapping themselves in the a mantle of "family values." They have no values, and they're giving families a bad name.
After posting this I discovered that the PM edit on the Marlboro page had been mentioned elsewhere previously. It seems the first person to spot the changes was Gene Borio who posted a note "[http://www.tobacco.org/resources/general/wikiscanner.html Tobacco Company Wikipedia Edits Revealed]" to <em>Tobacco.org</em> on August 16. When I was trawling through Wikiscanner on the names of various PR firms and companies last weekend and then subsequently writing the post, I forgot to search the web to see if it had been picked up anywhere else. A few had, though not on why the evidence indicated the original statement was accurate for the US.
It also works the other way. A year or so ago, I noticed some edits to both Wikipedia and Sourcewatch that came from IP numbers allocated to the [[American Enterprise Institute]], but apparently those IP numbers have subsequently been reassigned, and they're not showing up in WikiScanner.
One, it only catches not-logged-in edits - if someone creates a login, their IP doesn't show up and won't be in the public database dumps. So WikiScanner only catches the beginner spinners.
Two, the IP assignment data is only the current data, not historical data - and there's no good database of historical IP allocations, simply because there's no reason for anyone to keep them. This has already caught one set of edits that came from IPs allocated to the office of the Prime Minister of Australia, but which at the time the edits were made was actually assigned to someone else. So if you see something that looks really bad, it needs proper investigation before telling the world!
